Photoshop - where to begin
10 things
1. Retouching blemishes - spot healing brush. Understanding layers.
Choose one of the two retouch portraits in the Photoshop Practice folder. The male portrait may be a little more challenging. Or try both! Put your finished work in the drop off folder.
Then check this out to become aware of how much retouching is done on celebrities!
Celebrity retouching
2. Filters - liquify for subtle effects.
Use the liquify filter on one of the portraits to create subtle effects that improve the photo, then try using the liquify filter to create a fun and wacky effect.
3. Using adjustment layers and masks - to lighten or darken certain areas.
Find the mask_exposure photo in the folder and make adjustments using the exposure tool.
4. Find an image and try removing an object from the background using the content aware fill tool. Repair any remnants of the object with the spot healing brush or the patch tool.
5. Take a portrait of a person and place them on a different background. Have fun with this, but don't spend unnecessary time looking. This is a technical assignment. You should be finished by Monday at the latest. When you're done, save as a psd AND save for web and post it on your blog. Write about your procedure, step by step so you reinforce the learning.
You should have 2-4 images to submit. You might have used the selective adjustment/layer (#3) on your retouching image. That's fine. You might also have removed the object from the blending two images assignment.
In all you should cover these 4 things:
1. Retouching - spot healing brush. And liquify.
2. Adjustment layers and masks for selective adjustment.
3. Remove an object from a background.
4. Place a person on a different background.

Year Three - Interviewee Research!!
We are dividing and conquering today - we have our first interview booked with Anusree Roy (pronounced Anushree - notice how she says her own name in the first video interview)
Anusree Roy anusreeroy@hotmail.com
Watch the video and research this playwright and actor to learn more about her. This might help inform the kinds of questions we ask. Better to get more footage then just the bare minimum. We should get her talking briefly about her history in theatre and accomplishments as well as how Drama at Lakeshore impacted her.
Anusree Roy anusreeroy@hotmail.com
Anusree Roy is a Governor General’s Award nominated writer, and actor whose work has toured nationally. Her plays include: Brothel # 9, Roshni, Letters to my Grandma and Pyaasa. Her Opera librettos include: The Golden Boy and Noor over Afghan. Her latest librettoPhoolan Devi will premiere at N.Y.C in the fall of 2014.
She holds a B.A from York University and an M.A from the University to Toronto. She is the Co-Artistic Director of Theatre Jones Roy and has been published by the Playwright’s Canada Press. Her plays and performances have won her three Dora Mavor Moore Awards along with multiple nominations. She is the recipient of the K.M.Hunter Award, RBC Emerging Artist Award, The Carol Bolt Award and The Siminovitch Protégé Prize. Try out some animation! Bonus assignment
For those of you who have completed everything - and I mean EVERYTHING, to date, you may explore the world of animation by creating a simple animation using Adobe Flash, Adobe Photshop Or Adobe After Effects. You could also try out another type of animation using stop-motion or making your own zoetrope - see YuQin's blog ZYQ for a tutorial on that!
Find a simple tutorial and try it out. I suggest starting with a very simple animation like a bouncing ball.
Keep it simple and HAVE FUN!

Ok. We've looked at many stop-motion animations. Now we're going to hone in on specifically pixilation.
Check out this LINK to see several projects made by using live people in the place of inanimate objects to create funny and interesting pixilation projects.
The Hunter College Video was inspired by this one. Joey Ramone - New York City
Now check out this cool tutorial on how to create a 360 degree building spin.
This one by PES - Human Skateboard also shows how creative you can get with this technique.

Sizes for Stationary, Business Cards and Flyers
| STANDARD BUSINESS | |
Standard correspondence and direct mail envelopes. Includes the standard Number 10 envelope.
| |
| #9 ......................... | 3.875 x 8.875 |
| #10 ...................... | 4.125 x 9.5 |
The #10 Envelope is a standard business sized envelope. You can go to a number of different websites to find more information - perhaps you want to create a series of envelopes for various things - I have no idea why, but it's good to have the information.
http://www.ironsidepress.net/menu/printing-services/standard-sizes
http://www.paper-source.com/pdfs/envelope-size-chart.pdf
For your flyer you could go with 4.25" x 5.5" which would essentially be a quartered 8.5x11 paper. Or, any number of different sizes. Long and thin etc. Think about printing possibilities however and cost.
Business Cards - Standard size
http://www.printingforless.com/Business-Card-Specifications.html
3.5"x2" is the standard size. But again, noone says you have to be standard. Just think about cost and what's the most important factor...

the artist and his work.
AI WEI WEI: BIO
Ai Weiwei (Chinese: 艾未未;
pinyin: Ài Wèiwèi; born 18 May 1957 in Beijing) is a Chinese contemporary
artist, active in sculpture, installation, architecture, curating, photography,
film, and social, political and cultural criticism. He collaborated with Swiss
architects Herzog & de Meuron as the artistic consultant on the Beijing
National Stadium for the 2008 Olympics.
As a political activist, he has been highly and openly critical of the Chinese
Government's stance on democracy and human rights. He has investigated
government corruption and cover-ups, in particular the Sichuan schools
corruption scandal following the collapse of so-called "tofu-dreg
schools" in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. In 2011, following his arrest at
Beijing Capital International Airport on 3 April, he was held for 81 days
without any official charges being filed; officials alluded to their
allegations of "economic crimes". (source Wikipedia)

FIRST SHOOTING EXERCISE:
Here is an example of the Five Shot method.
Notice that there are two extra shots used on top of the 3:6:9 idea of wide, medium, close from three different perspectives.
Go around the school and find something happening that you can use for this exercise. Please don't spend too much time on this. Go to one of these three locations. The wood shop, the auto shop, the Costmetology room.
Take 5 different shots for 10 seconds each. Use a tripod to set up stead shots and compose each shot carefully.
1. Tight or CU - hands or whatever the person is doing
2. Face - who's doing it
3. Medium - face and hands
4. Over the shoulder - just what it sounds like
5. A different angle (at least one of these)
Come back with your footage and we will watch it together.

Year One Logo Assignment
After the QUIZ...
Once you have completed the tracing of your logo - the pictorial visual (tracing and representation of the animal you chose) you should ensure that you have one version in black and white and another in colour. Then you should post them on your blog with the written statement. See instructions below for what to write about.
If you are still working on it you can continue, and if you need more help, you can meet with Ms. Silverman next week during lunch or after school. At the very least, you should try to complete the animal image by the end of class on Friday. If not, you can come in at lunch next week to finish it.
Note: We will NOT be having seminar after all on Thursday, as that is the AGO trip for the seniors so Ms. McFadyen and Ms. Silverman will not be in class that day. You will have to come in on other days to complete the logo.
In Brief: Create a post titled LOGO ASSIGNMENT
1. Post Black and White traced animal logo to blog (save as png)
2. Post colour version traced animal logo to blog (save as png)
3. Written Statement
(If you have other versions, you may post up to two more, but it is not required - ie. with text)
AND As always
DROP OFF FOLDER PLEASE WITH .AI FILES!!
SHOW ME YOUR LAYERS!!
Finished logo project FINAL DEADLINE is next Friday October 4, 2013
WRITTEN STATEMENT: WHAT TO WRITE
1. Where did you begin?
Start with the two or three qualities that you have that would serve you well in a CyberARTS related career. Then discuss the animal you chose to represent you and why you think that animal works to represent you.
2. Elements and Principles.
Now discuss your choices of shape, colour, line quality, direction (thick, thin, gritty, smooth, diagonal, horizontal, curvy etc.), texture and space. Also discuss your choice of typography if you added any. What do those letterforms (the way the letters look) say? Are they edgy, artsy, confident, corporate? Be as descriptive and specific as possible. State the shapes used. State the colours used, the name of the font, the description of the lines. And then, explain the meanings behind all of these design choices. (ie. I chose a circular shape because it represents the sun, the moon and all of eternity (or whatever it represents to you). I chose to place the pictorial image so that it overlapped the circle to represent the idea of leaping forward etc.) Also discuss principles of design such as emphasis, rhythm and unity.
3. Get technical.
Discuss your technical process. What did you learn and how did you use Illustrator? What tools, use of layers, any effects etc.
4. Your thoughts and opinion.
Are you happy with the logo and how it turned out? Would you do anything differently if you had more time? What did you learn about designing a logo? Now that you know more about Illustrator, what do you want to do next? What do you want to learn more about?
If you have more time, you can make some changes to your logo, such as typography. Try several versions of it where the pictorial visual (your animal) is smaller compared to the text and where the text is smaller compared to the pictorial visual, versus similar in size. Try a variety of fonts and placements until you are happy with one.
You can choose to place up to four variations of your finished logo on your blog, but two of them MUST include the black and white version and colour version of just the pictorial visual (animal only). You can also do the combination with the text in both black and white and colour.
Also, please drop off your final logo(s) in .ai format, into your drop folder on the Lakeshore NAS server.

Year Fours Look HERE!!
First off, your Info Graphic. You're all working hard on this and doing a great job. I know I've sent some of you back to the drawing board and I think with some tweaking and additional imagery you're well on your way to producing a dynamic and informative info graphic.
When you are finished...and I will give you until the end of this week to complete it (outside of class time if you're not already finished) with a written statement (instructions to follow)...please post your info graphic on your blog. You should be exporting or saving as a gif or png.
Written statement should include:
1. Explain your concept and how you attempted to visually represent your career choice using the various visual elements and design principles. (think colour, graphic images, layout etc.).
2. What is your reason for choosing this career and how did you represent that in your info graphic?
3. What techniques did you use to create it? Everything from drawing/scanning to details about the computer program(s) and tools you used. Be specific - this is where I can assess how much you know and understanding the technical tools you use and will contribute to your knowledge/understanding mark.
4. Your final opinion. Are you satisfied with the work? Was there a particular info graphic you saw that inspired you? If you had more time, or looking at it now, would you change anything, and if so what, and why?

NEXT...
And now for something a little bit different.
Your last year in CyberARTS is meant to prepare you for admissions to University/College programs or apprenticeships, internships or starting your own business if you're really bold and brave.
You need to begin thinking about your portfolio requirements and what you might need to add to your current work to 'beef' up your existing portfolio.
But FIRST, you will design a logo and visual identity system for yourself.
Create an identity for your company - whether you want to sell your own artwork, or be a video game designer, you should have a logo, a business card and a graphic identity system that helps you visually define your company and set you apart from others doing similar things.
Read through this article on Branding, Identity and Logo Design
In particular, take a look at the list of visual devices you can use to identify yourself.
Understand the difference between a brand, an identity and a logo and begin to think about how you will create the foundation of your brand.
Look at the first three links at the bottom of the page - all except the one on finding a logo designer. You'll be designing your own logo.
DUE MONDAY: INITIAL PROPOSAL
Submit an initial proposal by Monday September 30th - on paper (to submit to Ms. Silverman)
AND be prepared to discuss your ideas with the class.
Your classmates may be able to offer some feedback and great ideas.
Requirements:
A company name
A logo
A stationary system
A flyer (to use as a template to announce upcoming shows or to send out/leave places to advertise your services)
At least two other types of visual (and/or audio/smell) devices (apparel, packaging, messaging, video etc.)

Movie Trailer Parody Assignment - Year Three Tech
Movie Trailer Parody Assignment.
TGI 3M1 CyberARTS Year Three
Ms. Silverman
Sound in multimedia productions has a tremendous impact on the outcome of the final product and on the viewers’ interpretation of the production.
Try watching any movie or tv show without the soundtrack – even just without the music and you will be amazed at the lack of emotional impact – or the lessening of emotional impact.
Þ Your assignment is to effectively and drastically change the mood and emotional impact of a movie trailer for a well-known Hollywood movie.
o You may rearrange the clips from the trailer
o You MUST change the soundtrack (music AND sound fx)
o You may use the original voice-over, or create your own, or “borrow” from other sources
o Your trailer must be around 2 minutes long - give or take 30 seconds. Please, no longer than 2:30 and no shorter than 1:30. You will lose marks for going over or under.
The important thing is that the changes you make effectively and drastically change the mood and emotional impact of the movie trailer.
You will be evaluated on the following:
Effective and dramatic change in mood
Effective choice of soundtrack/music
Effective use of sound fx
Effective use of voice-over (you should be re-recording the voice-over) Syncing and placement of Audio in relation to visual
When you are finished, you must post the original trailer as well as the altered trailer on your blog with a written report stating:
Your process - how you came up with idea - take use through your creative process.
Your choice of sounds - music, fx, voice to change the mood.
How you did - why you think you effectively and dramatically changed the mood of the trailer.
Your process - how you came up with idea - take use through your creative process.
Your choice of sounds - music, fx, voice to change the mood.
How you did - why you think you effectively and dramatically changed the mood of the trailer.
The written report will be evaluated on the following:
Communicates clearly, professionally
In depth description of how mood change was achieved (sound and visuals)
– original vs. new trailer
Movie choice and sound ideas must be submitted to me by Friday September 13 at the beginning of class.
Final Trailer posted on your blog with the written report, ready to present in class
DUE: Friday September 20th, 2013
Please save your final trailer in the original file format as well to drop into the drop folder.
