Please write an artist statement for your photography project that explains your concept. This should be appropriate for the gallery show at Lakeshore Arts. Please format this on an 8.5x11" page with your name at the top of the page as a heading. Below your name please write the title of your project.
Also, if you have more images in your series, but were unable to put them in the show - please add thumbnail images of all the images from your series.
Consider the following information: Your inspiration, concept/message/theme, chosen medium/technique and reasoning behind that (i.e. why you decided to digitally manipulate, or use black and white, or use HDRI etc.)
Submit to Ms. Silverman by Friday. Also, this should be posted on your blog with copies of all your images, including the title of your photo series - the blog should be titled Personal Photography Project.

Year 1 Tech--Stop Motion
For this week's blog entry, find an example of a stop motion movie, post a link to it and describe what makes it an effective film. Look specifically at the techniques like camera angles and shots, lighting, and transitions from one shot to another as well as compositional choices when doing your analysis.

Year 3 Tech - A note for you!
Please work on the music video assignment today. I've added a link to give you some information about shooting techniques and camera movements. I've also reduced the number of videos you need to do a final analysis on to only ONE!
1. Review the links I provided, taking note of the terminology used for different camera shots and shooting techniques.
2. Watch the videos and read the articles I've provided and then do the first part of the blog assignment, which is reviewing music videos through the decades. Answer the questions I provided in the blog post - Scroll down, it's just a few below this one!
3. Find your favourite music video (artistically and visually) and review it based on what I've asked for in the post.
Please do this today before continuing to work on the Palladio video.
That's it!
Thanks
Ms. Silverman

Blog posts Year 3 and 4
Daily Create Blog Posts.
CyberARTS Year 3 & Year 4.
There are 20 options here for
sound/image, still photography and video assignments. Choose 10 to do before
the winter holidays. You must complete at least two by the end of the week.
You must have at least two from
each category. The rest is up to
you. Year 3 MUST DO #15. Year 4 MUST DO #
1. Take a close up photo of an object with unique texture or pattern; make us guess
what it is.
7. Take a photo
that shows two contrasting things, e.g. light & darkness, life & death,
cats & dogs etc.
8. Power plugs are ubiquitous. Can you make a
creative photo of such a common
thing?
9. Mix a sound
from nature with a musical selection so both can be heard clearly.
10. Make a short audio
of the sound of water pinging, flushing, splashing, roaring, tumbling...and add
an image, or three or five.
11. Draw a flower with your eyes closed. Then
turn it into a vector illustration.
15.
Make an extreme close up 30 second video of
someone playing a musical instrument, using at least three different shots.
16. Record 30 seconds of ambient sound in your environment. Pair
it with images that contrast the sound you've recorded.
19. Make a 30 second video with sound of a typical street
scene using wide, medium, close-up and extreme close-ups.
Year 3 TECH: Music videos through the decades
Before looking at these videos, take a look at this website and read through the shooting tips from introduction to labeling your tapes.
Shooting techniques
And also this one on ShotTypes and also camera movements at the bottom of the page.

Take note in particular of the terminology used and use it in your review of the videos.
First, just for fun, check out the technology used in this music video. You need to open it in Google Chrome. It uses HTML 5.
First, just for fun, check out the technology used in this music video. You need to open it in Google Chrome. It uses HTML 5.
Also, please take a look at the history of music videos - which began in the 1980s with MTV. According to U.S. Time magazine, these are the best 30 music videos of all time.
Here is another "Best 30 Music Videos of All Time" by Music Radar
These seem a little more underground. Also more contemporary. Check them out as well.
Check out #22 Chemical Brothers - Star Guitar for some amazing editing and perfect sync-ing.
Take a look through both the Arcade Fire video and the article on the 30 best music videos. Watch a minimum of 9 of the videos and read the summaries below - making sure you watch at least 2 per decade. There are 10 per decade in the article.
Exercise:
FIRST Write a blog post...Title it Music Videos through history
1. Summarizing your thoughts, opinions and inspiration from the 9 videos you watched.
2. Which ones do you consider works of art in their own right? and Why? Note: The first video - Talking Heads "Once in a Lifetime" was exhibited in New York's Museum of Modern Art.
3. Also, comment on the types of changes you noticed through the decades. (Lighting, editing, sophistication, pace etc.)
4. How does the Arcade Fire video compare to the earlier decades?
5. What's next in music videos in your opinion?
THEN...
Choose one video (the one you find the most compelling, artistically) to post and embed into your blog post
1. Comment on the pacing, artistic style, lighting and artistic intent/meaning of the posted video.
2. How does this music video visually express the emotional theme of the music? Look at specific imagery, content and shot types, pace, style, lighting etc.

Year 3 Tech - Post your Progress
At this point you've done some preliminary research to discover some examples of experimental and art videos out there that might help inspire the Palladio project. These links should be embedded in a blog post so they can be shared, along with a written explanation of what you find compelling and important about them and how they are relevant to the project.
Also, you have all participated on some level in pre-production by developing a storyboard, a treatment and shot lists, shooting schedule etc.
We have heard your pitch and we've come back to tweak and redevelop your initial proposals.
NOW...you have spent the week experimenting yourselves with painting, ink blots, tesselations, sharpies...
Post your progress!
First of all, you should have something to post that you've worked on this week. Stop-motion animation, or a test video of something. Post your experiments from the week and discuss the following:
1. Post the video
2. Discuss your process. What did you do and how did you do it. Tell us about the technique.
3. Discuss the content/meaning. How do you think this might fit into the project. Does it have a connection to the music? If so, how? If not, why not?
4. Discuss next steps. This is IMPORTANT!!! Here is where you are taking this aspect of the design process (namely testing...) and making it useful. What worked and what didn't? Why? What do you need to do differently? Where do you think this could fit? Do you have any other ideas?

Year 4 Photography Process
Blog post Assignment - Concept. Technique. Process.
Due: Monday
On your blog, post a statement that describes the concept of your photography project, the technical aspects, and the process of creation.
1. Concept. Describe your intention in terms of the meaning, symbolism and message behind the image(s) your are making. Remember that this assignment requires you to take on a photography project that challenges you as much in terms of technique as it does concept. You photos should work together as a whole to send a message (that could be interpreted by the viewers in multiple ways), but also must have meaning for you. Your artistic intent must be clearly explained here.
2. Technique. Describe the photographic technique or style that you were drawn to. Explain the technical aspects as well as why you were drawn to them. This part should also be challenging you in some way. What are you learning technically as you are mid way through this project.
3. Process of creation. Discuss your creative process here. How is your project unfolding? Is it as you had intended? Now that you have begun, are you changing course or direction at all? If so, why? Describe as best you can the evolution of your ideas.
4. Post some work. Here is where you can post either a sample image from your project. If it is not finished, explain where the image lies in terms of phases of the project.

Digital Surrealism Introduction
Surrealism is an artistic movement
that was founded in the early 1920s. It's influences include Sigmund
Freud (famous psychoanalyst who was fascinated by the subconscious mind
and dreams). "Surrealism style uses
visual imagery from the subconscious mind to create art without the
intention of logical comprehensibility." In other words, it doesn't make sense in the real world, only the
surreal world. Surrealism includes an element of surprise and uses
unlikely juxtapositions and blends dream and reality.
Please research Surrealism in Art and/or photography and create a prezi presentation that includes the following: (Please post your finished presentation on your blog by Thursday, January 16, 2014. Ready to present please!)
1. What is Surrealism? (In your own words please!)
2. Pick one Surrealist artist and:
3. Show 8 examples of Surrealist art by the artist you have selected.
Please pick one artist each so that we can cover all of them. Or, you might find one on your own.
4. Please include any and ALL links that you have used to find your information. Please do not copy and paste directly from these links!! That's called plagiarism and it's a big fat NO-NO!
5. You can include a reference list at the end of your presentation, but you MUST embed a minimum of 3 links (they could be videos, audio interviews or just other websites with more information) into your prezi presentation.
6. Make the presentation surreal, but make sure we can clearly see and identify the artist's works, as well as the text that answers the questions above.

Post Your Chess Piece
To complete our drawing assignment, you need to photograph, scan and post your chess piece drawing on your blog. Please make sure you have used the copy stand AND taken a photo using overcast or shade lighting outside (this will ensure a very soft flat light that will reduce shiny reflections). Also scan your art work as well.
Once you have made enhancements to the three images in Photoshop, make sure you SAVE them with the appropriate title and your name, as .jpgs. You should have three images, Name_scan.jpg, Name_copystand.jpg, and Name_outside.jpg. When you post the three, make sure they are labelled accurately.
Write about the three techniques you have learned about to copy your work and discuss the pros and cons of each as they relate to YOUR artwork in particular. For example, what are the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Does one cause a bright spot on your paper? Does one not allow you to copy the entire image? etc.
Write another paragraph about how you used line and value in your drawing. Describe how you created movement, if you created rhythm or pattern, how you contrasted light and dark values, and what you were trying to achieve with your background. Also, discuss the techniques you used to help accentuate the chess piece as the focal point. This will be marked as an artist statement for your drawing assignment. Have fun!

Year Three Tech
Thursday will be your last day to work on your movie trailer mash-up. A reminder that your final project will need to be exported from imovie to be viewed on your blog.
Also, I will need to see your imovie project to see your fantastic editing work. Please drop this into the drop folder with your name in the file name. Name_movietrailer.
Please post both the original trailer for the movie AND your finished altered movie trailer with your artist statement.
Your artist statement MUST include the following:
Please write an in depth description beginning with your decision about which movie trailer to use. Describe how the mood change was achieved using both sound and visuals. Compare the original trailer to your altered trailer and discuss the impact you were aiming for by making the choices you did. Describe your choice of clips to use based on content, as well as the order in which you chose to arrange them. Also, comment on the music you chose and why the piece contributes to the shift in mood from the original trailer. You should be including any sound fx and voiceover as well, and commenting on the pairing of the music, fx and voiceover with certain scenes.
Please remember to write clearly and professionally. Edit first!!
I will be evaluating your written statement based on the following:
Knowledge/Understanding: evidence of knowledge and understanding of the program used and how the choices you made impact the viewer's emotional response.
Thinking/Inquiry: evidence of creative thinking in the pairing of sound and image, order of clips and choice of music, fx and voiceover
Communication: clear, well-written, professional. Evidence of care and editing before publishing the post.

Year 1 Tech Blog Post #2
For this week's blog post you will need to find three example of logos--each one must be of a different type: either typographic, abstract, pictographic, or combinations of these.
1) Begin by describing the logo using terms you have learned from your lessons on the Elements and Principles of design.
2) Now that you have described the logo, explain what you think the designer was trying to express with the choices s/he made.
3) Based on your analysis, who do you think is the target audience of the logo design?

1024x768 is the minimum standard screen size that we design for on the web. Design your web page layout in Photoshop - recommended dimension of 900x600 pixels to fit ever so neatly in a browser window. Then you can use Dreamweaver or hand coding (if you dare) to create your "index.html" file.

Year 3 Tech Blog Post - #2
If you haven't already posted your spinning object photo, I will give you until Friday, September 14th to post both that one and blog post #2. After that, I'll consider it a missed assignment and mark it with a zero!
To recap - Blog post #1 was to take a photograph of an object that is spinning, either frozen motion or blur and post it on your blog.
Blog post #2 is a freebie (a post you were asked to do anyway!).
Please post some links you found to conceptual art videos or photographs or otherwise... that serve as inspiration for our Spring Sensations video art project. Write a brief description about each one to accompany it. That's it!
We'll resume next week with blog assignments.

Year 4 Tech - Posting your InfoGraphic
Please post your infographic on your blog with a brief but informative written statement that includes the following:
Explain how your design choices help to express the career you are highlighting. Describe your choices of line, shape, colour, textures, value, and use of space as it relates to your design decisions - both to create a poster with visual impact as well as one that expresses your career of choice.
Also, comment on design principles such as unity, rhythm, balance and emphasis - particularly the choices you made in terms of font, size, contrast/variety and colour scheme. How did you emphasize certain pieces of information in order to create an infographic that has a clearly defined visual hierarchy.
Once you have completed this task, you may begin working on the IWDRM assignment.

Culminating Portfolio
As part of your culminating activity for this class, you must establish yourself in an online community as a cyberARTist. There are numerous professional-looking, yet free, online websites that allow you to present your work with brief descriptions (artist statements). It's time to get busy folks. Start now by searching for the online portfolio site that's right for you. Keep in mind, you will want to have one that includes video.
Your site should include a minimum of 12 pieces from both art and tech, however at least 7 must be from the tech classes. They can also be from the past three years of your cyberARTS classes.
The music video you are currently working on must be included, along with the promotional poster you are creating to go with it.
Requirements:
Easy to use (as a viewer)
Must display your work in a clean and professional format
Must have a space for text (your artist statements)
Must have contact information
You must also link to a facebook page (not your personal one, but a facebook page for your artwork) or other secondary social networking site
You must accurately tag and categorize your site (ie. illustration, design, fine art, multimedia etc.) based on the work you are displaying
Here are a few sites to get you started:
Note that some of them have immediate access to job postings (something to think about for your careers assignment!)

http://www.krop.com/
http://www.coroflot.com (I don't think this one has video, but it does have a design jobs section)

Your music video assignment, once completed with your individually written reports will also require a wee bit of marketing.
Your assignment (see handout) is to create a large promotional poster to advertise the release of the album or song by the artist you chose. You will be required to create an original image, either a graphic that is created on the computer (Illustrator or Photoshop) or an original photograph, or a combination. However, since this is a large poster, you must make sure that you are working with an appropriate resolution for your end product, which must be printable in CMYK colour mode.
Here is an article on image resolution to refresh your memory or give you a more in depth look at image resolution.
Here is an article on colour modes from adobe. Here is another from a graphic design perspective
Keep in mind, you will have no problem creating an image using the D3100 that can be printed up to 11x14" at 300 p.p.i, however the D50s will only allow printing up to 12x8" at 300 p.p.i. It is often stated that one can print at 240 p.p.i, however professionals still always use 300.
While you may feel that you don't need to read these articles, please do, as the information covered in them will be on the final exam. I will be reviewing this ahead of time, but make sure you read the articles and take notes, summarizing the key information. We will review it in class next week.

Animated poetry analysis
Search the internet to find animated, illustrated or action poetry. Anything that is a series of images, text, sound. You could try searching for multimedia poetry or kinetic typography poetry as well. View several and choose the one that inspires you the most. Post this on your blog with an analysis that addresses the following:
1. Design elements and principles - look at the use of line, shape, colour, space, value, texture and typography and images. Also, the use of emphasis, rhythm, balance, contrast and unity. Describe what you see.
Analyze the use of the above elements and principles in terms of how well the artist expressed the idea of the poem. For example, "The light, pastel colour scheme and fine lines really accented the choice of poems because the poem is all about feeling light and free."
2. Discuss the use of sound - voice, sound fx, and/or music. Describe and then analyze based on how well the sound expressed the idea, emotion and content of the poem.
3. Sequencing. Look at pacing, timing and sequencing. Describe and analyze.
4. Your opinion overall. What do you like about it? Why does it inspire you?
Post by Friday please!
