Adobe Illustrator Pen Tool Tips! Year 1 Tech

A few things to remember when using Adobe Illustrator to trace a photo:

1. USE LAYERS:
a) Put your photograph on layer 1, lock it so it doesn't move around and then make a new layer to trace the parts of the photograph.
b) Use a new layer for each segment of the object you are tracing so that you can easily control, arrange and manipulate each layer.
c) Rename and label each layer so you know what's on it. ie. Head, facial features, ears etc.

2. USE AS FEW POINT AS POSSIBLE WITH THE PEN TOOL
a) Try clicking each time your line changes direction and not every few millimetres (which will give you hundreds of annoying little nodes that will make you crazy!)
b) Use the pen tool to create curves. You will have better control if you learn to use anchor points and handles to create your vector illustrations.

CLICK HERE for a tutorial on using the pen tool in Illustrator if you need extra help. (Note: this tutorial will also show you how to use the pen tool in Photoshop and InDesign, but for our purposes, you can just watch the Illustrator part for now)

Logo Assignment - Step 1 (Year One Tech)

Spend the first 15-20 minutes of the period coming up with a few adjectives that you think describe you, and then decide on a company name and what your creative company does and who your clients are.

Then begin searching for animals and objects that you think express this personality and style.

Once you have found 5-10 images for your 2 -3 objects/animals, post them on your blog with a brief description that will tell me about your style, personality and company.

We will review this on Thursday.

Rhythm Post - year One Tech

Post your final steady and dynamic rhythm images here. Then complete the written requirements (on your handout) below each image. Be sure to label each of the images.
Remember to Export from Illustrator - choose .png as your file format. And click on USE ARTBOARD! Also, make sure your background is white. You can choose to keep the quality at 300 p.p.i. but it likely won't make a difference as most monitors have a maximum screen resolution of 72 p.p.i. Please finish your post by the end of the day!

You can finish this at home - please make sure the post is done before class on Tuesday.

Line in Design - Year One Tech

Lines are one of the most basic design elements used in art and design. They can be used to divide, to direct the eye, to create rhythm or to create forms. They can be implied and can also help form grids, one of the basic tools for layouts in graphic design.

FIRST, take about 20-30 minutes to read the following articles.

Here are 6 tips for designing with lines that will start you off.

Here is a post that goes into a little bit more detail about the use of line in design

Lines can also create mood and meaning. Here is a post that explains more about this in web design.

THEN, experiment with line by drawing 3 5x5" boxes in your sketchbook that convey 3 distinctly different emotions. Try to choose three different ones and challenge yourself!

Here are some ideas - anger, sadness, depression, boredom, joy, elation, fear, angst, anxiety, nervousness, enthusiasm, disappointment, happiness, loneliness, rage

You can fill the box any way you want, just use only line (pencil only) and express the emotion you chose. Please be prepared to hand in your sketchbook to Ms. Silverman on Tuesday. Make sure that you know what specific emotion you are trying to convey BEFORE you start sketching.

Elements and Principles of Design - Year One Tech

The Elements and Principles of Design are the foundations of design, whether it be in the print industry, photography, illustration, advertising, animation, video and film, web, fine arts, graphic design etc.

Once you know and understand these basics, you will gain the ability to control where your viewer looks, and when, or in what order! And then, the WORLD!!! Or at the very least - unbelievably cool looking posters, logos and other designs...

Once you have seen the powerpoint presentation in class, or if you missed it, find it HERE, fill out the handouts either by hand - or on the computer (whichever you prefer). Or you can see it right here from the blog post, if the link isn't working, or vice versa.

Elements of Design Handouts
Due: end of class on Monday, or first thing Tuesday morning - handed in.

Movie Trailer MashUp Assignment - CyberARTS Year 3/4

Movie Trailer Parody Assignment.
TGI 3M1 CyberARTS Year Three
Ms. Silverman

Sound in multimedia productions has a tremendous impact on the outcome of the final product and on the viewers’ interpretation of the production.

Try watching any movie or tv show without the soundtrack – even just without the music and you will be amazed at the lack of emotional impact – or the lessening of emotional impact.

Þ   Your assignment is to effectively and drastically change the mood and emotional impact of a movie trailer for a well-known Hollywood movie.
o   You may rearrange the clips from the trailer
o   You MUST change the soundtrack (music AND sound fx)
o   You may use the original voice-over, or create your own, or “borrow” from other sources
o   Your trailer must be around 2 minutes long - give or take 30 seconds. Please, no longer than 2:30 and no shorter than 1:30. You will lose marks for going over or under.

The important thing is that the changes you make effectively and drastically change the mood and emotional impact of the movie trailer.

You will be evaluated on the following:
Effective and dramatic change in mood
Effective choice of soundtrack/music
Effective use of sound fx
Effective use of voice-over     (you should be re-recording the voice-over)                               Syncing and placement of Audio in relation to visual

When you are finished, you MUST post the original trailer as well as the altered trailer on your blog with a written report stating:

  • Your process - how you came up with idea - take use through your creative process.
  • Your choice of sounds - music, fx, voice to change the mood.
  • How you did - why and how you think you effectively and dramatically changed the mood of the movie

The written report will be evaluated on the following:
Communicates clearly, professionally
In depth description of how mood change was achieved (sound and visuals)
      original vs. new trailer

Movie choice and sound ideas must be submitted to me by Friday September 13 at the beginning of class.

Final Trailer posted on your blog with the written report, ready to present in class
DUE: Friday September 20th, 2015

Please save your final trailer in the original file format as well to drop into the drop folder.
